Au Natural

There’s a certain carefree, careless gent

who frequents the AT north of Kent.

He does what few would dare

and is often found bare,

dozing on Schaghticoke with no tent.

Perspiration

While walking one day in a swelter,

a girl stopped at Moose Mountain Shelter.

The hikers who were there

gagged and began to swear.

They felt sick because they had smelt her.

Among the Bears

There’s a certain bear ranging near Lyme

Who gives hikers a thorough hard time

Kept from harm with a collar

He doesn’t fear a holler

Since he knows that to kill him’s a crime.

Ralph Waldo

A transcendentalist born in Mass.

saw an eyeball he just couldn’t pass.

“Sidestep it I daren’t,

It’s all too transparent.”

So he tripped and fell hard on his ass.

Poison Ivy

There was a dumb fellow named Riley

Who sat down in a patch of ivy.

A man they call Stuart

convinced him to do it,

but all of his talk was just jivey.

The Pledge

A few drunks took a hike to announce

their plan to quit booze and renounce.

They dared St. John’s Ledges,

but then broke their pledges,

And learned rum does not help one to bounce.

A Metropolitan

A reluctant young camper named Dan

could not sleep in the woods like a man.

He often put up tents

with deep ambivalence

and then left to go sleep in his van.

Squeezed

There once was an uncommon sneezer

on a search for the famed Lemon Squeezer.

She found it with a map,

but got stuck in the gap.

And it took seven days to unfreeze’er.

Lost

There once was a man from Poughkeepsie

who went for a walk feeling tipsy.

He lost sight of the blaze

and got lost in a daze.

Now he wanders the hills like a gypsy.
